Siddharth Garden Zoo,Aurangabad.
The Municipal Corporation, Aurangabad established a small Zoo in 1984 called Siddharth Garden zoo. Total area of the zoo is about 17 acres. Previously the zoo was established only for displaying small animals like rabbit, jackal, monkey, civet,cat and bird like peacock and some Herbivores like black buck, nilgai, samber etc.
But after 1990 concept plan of the zoo change & preservation of endangered species, education of citizen about wildlife, display of wild animals & upkeep of the zoo animal started in zoo. Then zoo collected lion, tiger, leopards,white tiger, elephant bear & systematic plan of zoo established under guideline of Central Zoo Authority.
Aurangabad Municipal zoo concentrated on wild life education & established A Vasundhara Cinema Theater to provide information & knowledge to viewers through various wild life films. This theater is established in 1995 & day by day numbers of viewers increasing, in year 2007-2008 total numbers of viewer’s 83,000 seen wild moves in our wild life cinema hall.
One Snake park is established in this zoo under guideline of central zoo authority in 1995 & now there 15 species of snake including rat snake, python, russell viper, cobra, common krait, trinket, earth boa etc. Total numbers of viewers in 2007-2008 are 6,58,000 & the snake park is good education center for snake lovers. Day by day viewers are increasing.
A aviary is developed in AMC Zoo in 1995 as per guideline of central zoo authority & presently 8 spices of water bird including printed strop, spoon bill, ducks, flamingo,& egret etc. Aviary is also attraction of our zoo & good education centre for bird lovers.
Presently in zoo there are 22 spices of animals are reared for conservation, education & display of viewers. Total area for zoo is 17 acres & it created restriction on breeding of animals and procuring new animals in the zoo.
As the day by day viewers are increasing & zoo is good attraction of viewers & education center for the viewers. So that AMC is decided to develop zoo in large space to provide sufficient space for zoo animals & trying to convert zoo from small to medium zoo by procuring more species, providing suitable space & natural habit to wild animals.
AMC passed the bill (bill no.243 dt.19/6/2008) to develop zoo at Mitmita place in large area about 40 hectors. The proposed site of land is gut no.307 at Mitmita on Aurangabad-Mumbai road & 8 km. from Aurangabad city. Procedure for position of proposed land from revenue department to Aurangabad Municipal Corporation in progress. After getting position of proposed land from revenue department, AMC will submit detail project report to establish for new zoo plan as per guideline of CZA. At present here is no more space for collecting new species but retaining the current spaces in appropriate number with good care and management, the AMC decided to convert some part of garden into the zoo.

As per the instruction and guidelines laid by the central zoo authority- New Delhi, Siddharth Garden AMC Zoo has prepared a master layout plan of this Zoo by increasing the proper space to each species of wild animal and it is submitted to central zoo authority along with contour map on date 03.05.2011. Approval to master layout plan is awaited from central zoo authority. After approval of the master plan of this zoo form central zoo authority, developmental works as per the approved plan will be taken in hand.  

 


  • Following spaces of wild animals, Aviary birds, reptiles & snakes are present in our zoo.

STUDY OF WILD ANIMALS - HERBIVOROUS ANIMALS
NILGAI / BLUE BULL  ( Scientific Name – Boselaphus tragocamelus )
  • Nilgai is the biggest Asian antelope & is one of the most commonly seen wild animal.
  • Habitat – Nilgai are diurnal & live in grasslands & woodlands. In India, from Himalaya to     Mysore.
  • Feeding habits – Grasses & plant leaves.
  • Feed requirement per day – Concentrate mixture-2Kg Green, fodder -8-12 Kg, Dry grasses -5-10Kg.
  • Behavior - *Blue bull mostly lives in herds. *They avoid dense forests.
  • There are 10 Nilgai in AMC zoo on dt:16/3/10. (2 Males & 8 Females)
  • Size : Height : 52 to 58 inches. Weight : 150 to 200 Kg.
  • Gestation period : 8 to 9 Months.
  • Litter size : 1 calf at one time.
  • Age at sexual maturity : 21 months.
  • Life span : 15 years.

                                    Breadth : 2.0 m.
                                    Height : 2.0 m.
  • There are  8 NILGAI ( 2 MALES AND 6 FEMALES) in this  zoo on the date 07.12.2012   NILGAI / BLUE BULL
BLACK BUCK (Scientific Name : Antelope cervicapra. )
  • Habitat : Indian Dense forests & Grasslands.
  • Feeding Habits : Grasses & plant leaves.
  • Size : Height : 30 to 35 inches.
  • Weight : 15 to 20 kg.
  • Gestation period : 180 days.
  • Litter size : 1 fawn at one time.
  • Age at sexual Maturity : 12 months.
  • Life span : 15 years.
  • Behavior : Adults males are highly territorial. Female groups may graze through male territories. Young males & bucks without territories  form their own male groups.
  • There are 35 Black buck in AMC zoo on dt:07.12.2012. (15 Males & 20 Females).
CHINKARA (Scientific name : Gazelle gazelle )
  • Body characteristics : Chinkara have an usual white streak down each side of the face,so characteristics
  • Habitat : Dwarf plants & small hilly areas in south & Central India up to Krishna river. 
  • Feeding Habits : Crops,Grasses,Plant leaves. 
  • Feed requirement per day :
    * Conc. mix. : 1 kg.
  • * Green fodder : 4 to 6 kg.
    * Dry kutti : 2 to 4 kg.
    * Mineral mix. : 50 gm.
  • Size : Height : 26 inches. Weight : 15 to 20 kg.
  • Gestation period : 5 months.
  • Litter size : Single young one at one time.
  • Age at sexual maturity : 12 to 15 months.
  • Life span : 10 years.

                                    Breadth : 1.5 m.
                                    Height : 2.0 m.

CHITAL (Scientific name : Axis axis.)
  • Synonym : Spotted deer.
  • Habitat : Forests of Himalayan region & Madhya Pradesh.
  • Feeding Habit : Grasses, Bushes & Plant leaves.
  • Size : Height : 90 Cm. Weight : up to 75 Kg.
  • Gestation period : 180 days.
  • Litter Size : 1 Calf at single gestation.
  • Age at Sexual Maturity : 1 to 2 Months.
  • Life span : 15 years.
  • Space requirement :

                     Length : 3.0 m.

                     Breadth : 2.0 m.

                     Height : 2.5 m.

SAMBAR (Scientific name : Cervus unicolor.)
  • Physical characters : Samber is a large dark brown,maned Asian deer.
  • Coat is dark brown with chestnut marks on the rump & under parts.
  • Size : Length : 5 feet. Weight : 225 to 320 kg.
  • Habitat : Indian forest areas & districts. Burma & Ceilone.
  • Feeding Habits : Crops, Grasses & Plant leaves.
  • Feed requirement / day :

          Concentrate mix – 5 kg. Lucerne - 3 kg. 
          Hay & green grass – Ad - libitum

  • Gestation period : 8 months.
  • Litter size : 1 Calf at one time.
  • There are 31 Samber in AMC zoo on dt:16/3/10. (10 Males & 21 Females).

SLOTH BEAR (Scientific name : Melursus ursinus.)
  • Habitat : In India Assam to Himalaya- mountains & grass lands.
  • Feeding Habit :Grains, Vegetables, fruits- Honey.
  • Size : Length : 4 – 5 feet. Weight : 280-300 kg.
  • Gestation period : 7 to 8 months.
  • Litter size : 2 to 3 cubs in single gestation.
  • Age at sexual maturity : 2 to 3 years.
  • Life span : 40 years.
  • There are 2 Sloth bears in AMC zoo on dt:16/3/10. (1 Male-Shankara-40 yrs & 1 Female-Reshma-33 yrs).
  • Space requirements :
    Size of the feeding cubicle / night shelter.
    Length : 2.5 m.
    Breadth : 1.8 m.
    Height : 2.0 m.

ELEPHANT (Scientific Name – Elephas maximus )
  Classification :
  • African Elephant. {Loxodonta africans}
    Large ears
    Tusks in both sexes
    Hollow backed with lumbar prominence.
    Weight at maturity : 6000 Kg [male]
    Distribution : East central & West Africa.
  • Indian Elephant {Elephas maximus}
    Small ears. Tusks in male only.
    Convex backed.
    Weight at maturity : 3000 kg. (Male) e.
    Distribution : Ceylon,India,Burma,Thiland, Malasia.Indonesia. Habitat : Thick forests, Asia & West Africa.

Feeding Habit : Grasses, Leaves, Fruits, Roots, Bamboo leaves, Sugarcane. Size : Length : 6-12 feet. 
Weight : 2268-6350 Kg.
Gestation period : 22 months.
Litter size : Single Young One at one time.
Age at sexual maturity : Male : 9-10 years Female : 6 years.
Life span : up to 50 years.

There are 2 Elephants in AMC zoo on dt:07.12.12. (2 Females-Saraswati-51 yrs & Lakshmi-14 yrs).

Space requirement :

Water requirement : 140 to 230 litter per adult per day.
Physical examination & Diagnosis : Normal body temp. : 35 to 37 centigrade.

Respiratory rate : 4 to 12 breath / minute.

CARNIVOROUS ANIMALS

Carnivorous animals are – Tiger , Lion, Panther, Jackal, Wolf , Hyena ,Civet cat

TIGER (Scientific name – Panthera tigris.)
Types :
1.Royal Bengal tiger.
2.White tiger.

Habitat : Forests in Asian continent.
Feeding Habits : Meat.
Size : Length : 9 to 10 feet. 
         Weight : 180 to 230 kg. 
Gestation period : 98 to 110 days. 
Litter size : 1 to 6 cubs. 
Age at sexual maturity : 3 to 5 years. 
Life span : 18 to 20 years.  
Space requirement in captivity : Minimum size of outdoor enclosure per pair=1000 Sq.m.
Average sleeping period : 16 to 18 hours.
Full running speed : = 60 km./ hour.

Diseases : Dreadful disease of white tiger is “Feline leucopenia”.
Characteristic of cyclicity : Polyestrous through out the year.

LION  (Scientific name – Panthera leo.)
Habitat : Gir forest in Gujarat & in South Africa.
Feeding Habits : Meat.
Size : Length : 9 to 10 feet.
Weight : 180 to 270 kg.
  • Gestation period : 98 to 112 days.
  • Litter size : 1 to 6 cubs.
  • Age at sexual maturity : Male : 4 years. Female : 3 years.
  • Life span : 18 to 20 years.
  • Space requirement in captivity : Minimum size of outdoor enclosure (per pair)=1000 Sq.m.
  • The lion is the most endangered large carnivore.
  • Polyoestrus throughout the year.
  • Duration of heat : 4 to 16 days.

    (1 Female- Rohini-21 yrs).
PANTHER / LEOPARD (Scientific name : Panthera paradus.)
  • Habitat : Forests & Mountains of India, Burma & Srilanka.
  • Feeding Habits : Meat.
  • Size : Length : 3 to 8 feet.
             Weight : 52 to 70 kg.
  • Gestation period : 98 to 105 days.
  • Litter size :1 to 5 cubs.
    Age at sexual maturity : 3 to 4 years.
  • Life span : 20 years.
  • Space requirement in captivity : Minimum size of outdoor enclosure

JACKAL (Scientific name : Canis aureus.)
  • Habitat : Europe & Asiatic continent, India Burma.
  • Feeding Habits : Meat.
  • Size : Length : 60 to 75 cm.
  • Weight :17 to 25 kg.
  • Gestation period : 63 days.
  • Litter size : 3 to 4 pups.
  • Age at sexual maturity : 3 years. Life span : 12 years.
  • Space requirement in captivity : Minimum size of outdoor enclosure

CIVET CAT (Scientific name : Paradoxurus hermephroditus.)
  • Habitat : India, Burma, Malaya.
  • Feeding Habits : Meat & fruits.
  • Size : Length : 3 to 4 feet.
    Weight : 2.5 to 4.5.kg.
  • Gestation period : 60 to 90 days.
  • Litter size : 1 to 4.
  • Age at sexual maturity : 1 year.
  • Life span : 15 year.

WOLF (Scientific name : Canis lupus.)

  • Size : Height : 3 feet.
    Weight : 40 kg.
  • Gestation period : 90 days.
  • Litter size : 1 to 4 cubs.
  • Age at sexual maturity : 1 to 2 years.
  • Life span : 24 years.

REPTILES (Scientific name : Crocodylus palustris lesson.)
  • Habitat : Rivers, lakes & other large water bodies.
  • Feeding Habits : Hunts in water, eats fish & any animal that can overcome.

  •          Weight : 50 to 60 kg.
  • Female lays eggs of size 70 X 50 to 80 X 50 cm.
  • Incubation period : 70 to 80 days.
  • Eggs are white in color & hard shelled.

BIRDS
Commonly observed wild birds are :  Emu , Painted storck ,Greater flamingo, Eurasian spoon bill , Duck 
        There are 28 Water birds in Ivary of AMC zoo on dt:16/3/2010.
EMU (Scientific name : Dromaius novaehollandriae )
  • Second largest extant bird in world by height, after ostrich.
  • Habitat : Commonly found in Australia & they avoid heavily populated areas, dense, arid areas.
  • Food : Grass, grain, insects, ants, pebbles & stones.
  • Eggs: Color is dark green, weight: 900Gm,
  • Incubation period : 56 days.
  • Male of this spp. Uniquely hatches the eggs after female lays them.
    There are 2 Emu in AMC zoo on dt:07.12.2012.

GREATER PAINTED STORCK {Rajchaha} (Scientific name : Rostratula benghalensis)
  • Habitat : Throughout the India & in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Srilanka.
  • Food : Paddy grain, vegetables, insects, worms & molluscus.
GREATER FLAMINGO {Raj hans}(Scientific name : Phoenicopterus ruber Linn. )
  • Habitat : Throughout the Indian union, Bangladesh, Pakistan.
  • Food : Crustaceans, worms, insects larvae, seeds of marsh plants & organic ooze.
  • Eggs : 1or 2.
  • Color : White with faint bluish tinge.
EURASIAN SPOON BILL {Chamach baza} (Scientific name : Platalea leucorodia Linnaeus )
  • Habitat : Throughout the Indian union, Bangladesh, Pakistan & Sri lanka. Food : Tadpoles, frog, molluscus, insects & vegetables.
  • Eggs : 4.
  • Color : Sullied White sparingly spotted & blotched with deep reddish brown.
